Why have an Annual Campaign?

In order for Yellow Springs Schools to maintain our reputation for excellence, we need active participation from parents, community members, and alumni. Participation comes in different forms, but we hope that all friends of the schools will offer a financial gift to the Annual Campaign according to their ability to give. We also encourage our families, community members, and alumni to become involved by volunteering time. 

What is the Annual Campaign?

The Annual Campaign is a fundraiser that collects additional funds needed to provide teachers and students with opportunities that go above and beyond the reach of the district’s normal operating budget, including funding for teacher training and special projects.  In our first annual campaign in 2016-2017, we raised nearly $15,000 in donations from parents, staff, community members and alumni. The funds will be used this year to support student travel to Peru, send teachers to a Deeper Learning Conference, and provide training in Restorative Justice practices to all staff.  

How much should I give?

This year, our goal is to raise $20,000. With the help of several generous lead donors, we have already raised $7,500 for the 2017-2018 Annual Campaign! In order to reach our goal of $20,000, we need several gifts at the Leader, Supporter, and Friend levels (see gift range chart below).

How do I make a donation?

At this time, all donations collected through the Annual Campaign will be deposited into the Yellow Springs Public Schools Capital Fund, administered by the Yellow Springs Community Foundation (YSCF). To make a donation to the Annual Campaign, access the Donate Now button on the Advancement page of the Yellow Springs Schools website (www.ysschools.org/Advancement.aspx) or make a check or money order payable to the Yellow Springs Community Foundation, with the Yellow Springs Public Schools Capital Fund on the memo line. The mailing address for the YSCF is:

What does the Annual Campaign support?

Gifts to the Annual Campaign are used to support a variety of areas of programmatic need. In most circumstances, it is at the discretion of the School Board, the Superintendent and the school administrators to determine where your gift will have the greatest impact. Essentially, donations to the Annual Campaign are used to support current needs of the school district, which can range from providing professional learning opportunities for teachers to supporting international student travel. 

Can I request that my donation be used in a specific way?

Restricted annual gifts are not encouraged by the district because they limit the flexibility the administration has to meet programmatic needs. Donations collected as part of the Annual Campaign will be directed to the Yellow Springs Schools Capital Fund. This fund allows the most flexibility in how the funds will be used, and is left to the discretion of the School Board, the Superintendent and the school administrators

If you wish to donate to a specific program (e.g., music, sports, student scholarships, etc.), please contact Dawn Boyer at dboyer@ysschools.org. Additionally, the Yellow Springs Community Foundation administers several funds that benefit Yellow Springs Schools. What other types of donations can I give to the schools?

Yellow Springs Schools are able to accept many types of donations, including classroom supplies, computers, musical instruments, sports equipment, and furniture, as well as cash and real estate. 

Is my gift to the schools tax deductible?

Yes, if the donation is made through the Yellow Springs Community Foundation. The Foundation is a tax-exempt, public, charitable corporation and any contributions are tax-deductible. A cash gift is fully deductible up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income in any one year. 

As a public school district, Yellow Springs Exempted Village School District is exempt from federal income tax and eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions from individuals under Section 170(c)(1) of the IRC.  However, we are not currently set up to administer tax-deductible contributions and advise donors who prefer their contribution to be tax-exempt to direct their donation to the Yellow Springs Public Schools Capital Fund (administered by the Yellow Springs Community Foundation).
