Yellow Springs Schools

All public schools in Ohio are required to identify gifted students in kindergarten through grade 12. Identification is accomplished using scores on approved performance assessments and nationally normed tests. Although school districts are required to identify students, districts are not required to provide gifted education services. At this time, the Yellow Springs Schools do not provide gifted services.
Whole-grade gifted screening takes place in the fall at Mills Lawn Elementary School. All students entering the third grade complete the Otis Lennon School Abilities Test. Students in grade four are identified using the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.
Students meeting the state of Ohio gifted criteria may be identified in the following areas:
  • Superior Cognitive Ability
  • Specific Academic Ability (Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies)
  • Creative Ability
  • Visual/Performing Arts Ability
If you would like to recommend your child for screening and/or assessment in any of these areas, you may pick up a nomination form from the Gifted Coordinator, Ms. Carol Culbertson or download from this site. Completed nomination forms need to be returned to the building secretary. For more information, please call Mills Lawn School at (937)767-7217.
