Writing 1st Quarter

My pedagogical approach to writing follows the Writing Traits model.  At the model’s core are fundamental principles: “conducting high-quality assessment that leads to focused instruction, establishing clear goals for teaching and learning, using shared vocabulary to talk about writing, and weaving revision and editing together seamlessly and strategically.” (Graham &Perin, 2007).  These traits allow me to break writing down so that I can talk to my students about it, determine what is working and what isn’t, and target the specific skills that students need.

The Writing Traits:

Ideas:the piece’s content-its central message.

Organization:the internal structure of the piece.

Voice:the tone of the piece which is achieved through a strong understanding of the purpose and audience.

Word Choice:the vocabulary the writer uses to convey meaning and enlighten the reader.

Sentence Fluency:the way words and phrases flow through the piece.

Conventions:the mechanical correctness of the piece.

Presentation:the physical appearance of the piece.
