On the morning of September 11, 2002 Mills Lawn held a special flag ceremony and observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The flag was raised, then lowered to half-staff as school band members played taps and a nearby church bell rang three times.
