Welcome
to the 2006/07 school year! We hope it is a fantastic year for you and your
MLS student(s). Those of us involved in PTO are very excited about our plans
for this year. We have chosen a theme, around which our programs and events
will be centered. That theme is RESPECT. Here's a sampling of what
we're coordinating:
- Respect for our
talents and virtues:
Grammy-award winner Red Grammer will conduct an in-school event for the
children and, hopefully, a concert for all MLS families.
- Respect for our
different cultures: We're
working on foreign language classes to be held either as in-service or
after-school programs, with a celebration to showcase what children have
learned and perhaps sample some interesting cuisine.
- Respect for our
bodies: October is National
School Lunch month. We're planning to invite a nutritionist to talk with us
about food choices that feed our bodies and our brains.
- Respect for each
other: We're planning an
event, hopefully in-school, in-service for teachers, and an evening event
for parents on bullying and cliques, and how we can intervene to make
interactions more respectful and positive.
- Respect for the
Earth: How about a "Save the
Earth" event, perhaps in collaboration with folks from the Glen. This will
be a fun, educational family event.
Each of
these events, as well as others we haven't mentioned, will be much more
successful, and reach more people, if you get involved. If you're interested
in any of these topics, or are passionate about others, please get involved to
make them happen.
PTO meetings will be held on a regular basis and anyone interested may
attend. Meetings will be held the third Wednesday of each month, starting on
September 20, for the Super Search Forum when you'll be asked to
give your input on the search for our next school superintendent. Dr.
Armocida will retire in 2007. Please plan to attend and give your thoughts
and opinions on this important position in our district. We plan to have
babysitting available at all meetings and events, hopefully by high school
students who will play with your children and also be available to tutor them
and help with homework.
