Chicks
hatched in the first and second grade classrooms as part of a 4-H project
offered through an Ohio
State University Extension program. Through this program, children
learned about egg nutrition, what’s inside an
egg, chick embryology,
and did experiments with eggs.
Each
class was provided with an incubator and a dozen chicken eggs. Students
took turns turning eggs each day as we anticipated the chicks’ arrival. A
lot of life science standards were covered in both grades as students
focused heavily on how the chicks needs are met in their environment. The
second grade also learned about other oviparous organisms (egg-layers) in
their classrooms and chose one organism for an take-home research project. |
