Award-winning author Ann Hagedorn and musician/songwriter Allen Schwartz
presented a powerful program in words, song, and images to all Mills Lawn
students. Their program was based upon Ms. Hagedorn's Pulitzer Prize
nominated book
Beyond the
River: The Untold Story of the Heroes of the Underground Railroad,
which was also chosen as a Most Notable Book by the American Library
Association.
"Schwartz's songs are artfully interwoven with excerpts from Hagedorn's
book, bringing to life the drama of the Underground Railroad in Ripley,
Ohio, and the courageous men and women, both black and white, who
participated in this distinctly American movement."
