Calculus for Kids
2006-07

Some Mills Lawn first through sixth graders are learning about calculus and physics with Mrs. O’Brien in ILE and Dr. Dennis Breiter.

Dr. Breiter attended Mills Lawn and is a graduate Yellow Springs High School. He has a Ph.D. in physics and calculus and currently lives and works in Texas. He owns his own company specializing in the development of scientific models used during research.

Dr. Breiter has also been working on developing a curriculum to introduce calculus to school age children. This process uses simple graphs that introduce the basic concepts of calculus (time and distance graphs) with hands-on practice in solving various problems. The program also introduces the basic elements of physics to compliment the calculus.

His vision involves a variety of grade levels. Students work in mixed groups with 5th and 6th graders serving as leaders for the younger students. Students meet three times a month, including a once a month teleconference with Dr. Breiter from Texas. The teleconference gives the students an opportunity to talk with him and to ask questions about the math and the science.

Dr. Breiter came to Mills Lawn twice as a kick-off to this residency. He will most likely come again during the winter. During his first visit he talked about his profession and love of science and math. During his second visit he talked about the work the students would be doing together.
