On December 13 Mills Lawn fifth and sixth graders joined 547,826 readers in 2451 locations in 50 states and 28 countries in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record™ for the "Most People Reading Aloud Simultaneously in Multiple Locations." The event, "Break a World Reading Record with Charlotte's Web" introduced Charlotte's Web to new fans, encouraged longtime fans to read it again and built excitement for this heartwarming story.

On Wednesday, December 13, 2006 starting at 12 noon EST, longtime and new fans of Charlotte's Web gathered in schools, hospitals, libraries and community centers around the world to read a passage from the story that celebrates the moment Charlotte and Wilbur meet for the first time. This passage marks the beginning of a true friendship, filled with loyalty, sacrifice, and miracles.

According to Guinness World Records™, the current record for the largest number of people reading the same piece of literature aloud, simultaneously, in multiple locations is 155,528 students from 737 schools throughout the United Kingdom. They read William Wordsworth's poem "Daffodils" on March 19, 2004.

The Charlotte's Web event appears to be a new world record. The new record-breaking attempt is being evaluated by Guinness World Records™, and a statement will be issued when the new record is verified.
