Chemistry and Forensic Science Residency
Dr. David Finster, Wittenberg University
January 2007

Mills Lawn sixth graders were involved in an exciting science residency when they explored chemistry and forensic science with Dr. David Finster, of the Department of Chemistry, Wittenberg University (Springfield, Ohio).

Dr. Finster, who is also a parent of former Mills Lawn students, led students through an investigation of a simulated crime of theft. Using clues gathered from the crime scene, students investigated fingerprints, soil, powder analysis, ink, fiber analysis, and other physical evidence. They also used infrared technology and gas chromatography to narrow down the list of "suspects" and tried to determine who committed the crime.
