WSU Nursing Students at Mills Lawn
Healthy Hearts

Nursing students from Wright State University came to Mills Lawn P.E. classes to work on an assignment for their Pediatrics class. Students in grades 3-6 were asked to take heart rates when at rest and then again after exercising. The exercise stations included shuttle run, jumping rope, jumping jacks, and sitting. They did this several times and they recorded their results on their record sheets. Students were reminded that exercise is necessary for maintaining a strong and healthy heart.

First and second graders jumped rope, skipped, ran, crab walked, and learned to find their heart. The nursing students asked them to place a paper heart on their bodies where they thought their hearts were. They listened to each other’s hearts before and after exercise. The Mills Lawn students also had a worksheet and were asked to circle heart healthy activities. Discussions were held after they finished the worksheets.
