Our Japanese Pen Pals
2001-2002
Thanks
to former Mills Lawn student, Anita Allen, who was
studying and teaching in Japan, our sixth grade classes began corresponding with
sixth graders from a suburban Tokyo school. Former Mills Lawn student, Ben
Stratton, who is studying Japanese at Ohio State University, also traveled to
Japan and toured the school.
Anita and Ben returned to Yellow
Springs in March with letters from our Japanese pen pals, many of which included
small gifts, such as coins, origami, and baseball cards. Anita had translated
each letter into English for our students' benefit. She and Ben also showed a
video of the Japanese sixth graders performing skits in English.
