Second graders start their own businesses

To begin this social studies unit, students took a walk through downtown Yellow Springs to get ideas for designing their model business buildings. They drafted a plan in class and art teacher, Amy Minehart, helped them develop ideas. Students created workers for their businesses and developed worker biographies based upon characteristics that they decided a good worker should possess.

The culminating unit celebration was a Street Fair. Students worked together to create a business and advertisement for the big event. On the day of the street fair students worked at their business and later got to be the customer. Students were given $1.00 and planned a budget for their shopping day. They quickly learned that they could not buy everything! Goods and services were sold and students were able to practice all that they learned about the business community. Parents and community volunteers helped on this day.
