Morning Warming
Third grade hot chocolate business teaches economics concepts

“Morning Warming” is a hands on unit of study that bring to life third grade academic content standards in the social studies curriculum. Third grade classes created a business from the ground up, which sells hot chocolate to Mills Lawn students three mornings a week before school.

Teachers Kristin Adkins and Sarah Amin divided the two classes into four committees (board members/proposal team, advertising committee, suppliers, and laborers). Each group researched then developed an understanding of production, distribution, and consumption. The goal was to have students identify producers and consumers, categorize economic activities as examples of production or consumption, explain advantages of specialization and division of labor to produce items, recognize that money facilitates the purchase of goods, services, and resources, and enables savings, and identify examples of economic competition in the local community.

Students planned together, shopped for supplies at a local warehouse club, made advertising posters, and sold their product as part of this learning project. (See photos below.)

Students will use the business profits to purchase items for the school. Some ideas the students have had are recess games and equipment or flowers and plants to beautify the school grounds.
