Students harvested carrots in the fall from the first and second grade
organic garden. The garden was funded by a grant from the Yellow Springs
Endowment for Education.
The garden project relates to many Ohio Standards in math and science:
It gives students opportunities to describe
similarities and differences among the same kinds of plants, develop
testable questions, communicate information from careful
observations, explain sources of food other than grocery stores, and
recognize that seasonal changes can influence the health and survival of
plants. Since the garden plots are divided into square feet (for “square
foot gardening”), students are also able to incorporate math concepts such
as multiplication and measurement, including time and calendar concepts.
