Patricia Polacco
School-wide Author Study
 2010

Mills Lawn students were involved in a school-wide author study of the books of noted children’s author Patricia Polacco. An all-school assembly on January 25 kicked of the month-long study with Aurelia Blake, McKinney Middle School English teacher, reading Enzo’s Splendid Garden. Kindergarten teacher Becky Brunsman also wrote a song for the whole school to sing highlighting key aspects of Ms. Polacco’s life.

Each grade level had a focus book and specialists chose books to share with the whole school.  Some specialists also helped with special grade level projects. Each classroom decorated either their door or hallway to represent their book.  Each day the WMLS News also highlighted a "Patricia Polacco Interesting Fact" for the day.

The week of February 16 was "We Love Patricia Polacco Week." Students and teachers met in mixed grade level groups to share what they learned during our author study.

On February 8, nationally recognized Yellow Springs storytellers Jonatha and Harold Wright (above) read from Patricia Polacco’s books and told stories about their own childhoods. This mimics the way in which Ms. Polacco writes, retelling a lot of stories told to her as a child.

Yellow Springs artists Libby Rudolf, Theresa Mayer (above left), and Toni Laricutta Stratton (above right) worked with the second grade on a watercolor installation. Students read Appelemando's Dreams, wrote about their own dreams, and interpreted their dreams through the use of watercolors with the artists’ help (below).
