Physical
education is a vital and purposeful part of the total educational program, which
provides for the optimum physical, intellectual, social and emotional
development of each student. The goal of physical education is to provide a
relevant program that stresses
developing physical and motor fitness, fundamental motor skills, skills for
participation in sports, games, and in leisure time pursuits, and of developing
and practicing principles of lifetime/sportsmanship and etiquette.
At Mills Lawn the emphasis on cooperative and
integrated learning also has it’s place in Physical Education. Lessons in dance
are coordinated with classroom learning or with other specialist areas such as
music. Students learn to work cooperatively with each other when creating and
performing jump rope routines. The third and fourth grades learn about bike
safety and bike path etiquette from a local expert, and then put all into practice
with a 3-mile bike ride from school and down
the bike path.
