Chasing Vermeer
An ILE Reading Exploration

The 4th grade ILE Reading Pullout is reading Chasing Vermeer, by Blue Balliett and illustrated by Brett Helquist.  It is a fun book of unexplainable occurrences that bring Petra Andalee and Calder Pillay together.

An eccentric old woman seeks their company and an invaluable Vermeer painting disappears.  Before they know it, they find themselves at the center of an international art scandal, where no one, neighbors, parents, teachers are spared from suspicion.

As Petra and Calder are drawn clue by clue into a mysterious labyrinth, they must draw on their powers of intuition, their problem solving skills, and their knowledge of the Dutch painter Vermeer.  Can they decipher a crime that has left even the FBI baffled?

In addition to reading this very exciting book we are studying Vermeer’s paintings, learning how to decipher codes as well as working with Pentomino puzzles.  Why pentominoes you ask?  You have to read the book.
