Saturday, Nov. 22, the teams competed in the local championship at the Boonshoft Museum. It was a beneficial experience, a taste of competition without the fear of elimination. Connie Jensen, head of the Wright Patterson Educational Outreach Robotics program, is facilitating the Yellow Springs teams. She has help from teachers Becky O’Brien and Ben Trumbull and mentors Dan and Libby Rudolf, Carol Simmons, Lauren Miller, Jo Franny and Mike Reichert and other parents.
Each team is judged in four areas. 1) They must figure out how to design and program a Lego robot to accomplish 10 missions on the “Mars Board”, such as launching a rock sample and clearing dust from the solar panel. These tasks are similar to the real-life problems faced by the robots exploring Mars. 2) They are also responsible for researching a question and developing a presentation demonstrating their understanding of the issue. Their methods ranged from newscaster interviews to a play, a PowerPoint presentation and a Claymation movie. 3) They must demonstrate good teamwork skills and sportsmanship. It is important to show how they worked together to solve the problems. 4) They must each help to explain the methods they used in designing their robots, why they chose certain solutions, etc.
The Regional Championship was held at Wright State on December 13.
