►The thief used some kind of plastic wrap to protect the trophy and keep fingerprints off of it. The plastic wrap was also tied with some white string. Both the plastic wrap and the string can be analyzed to see if they match samples of plastic wrap and string found in the homes of the suspects. ►The thief discarded the solvent soaked rag and a small bottle of cleaning fluid. The fluid can be tested to see if it is the same as cleaning fluid samples found in the suspects' homes. ►The ink from the ransom note can be analyzed to determine if pens found with the suspects were used to write the notes. ►The yard outside the classroom the day of the theft was muddy. Soil samples from the suspects' shoes can be analyzed and compared with dirt outside the classroom. ►A fresh snow had fallen just before the theft. Several shoeprints were found outside the classroom. Photographs of the shoeprints were taken. These can be compared to the soles of the shoes found with the suspects. ►Although the thief was careful not to leave fingerprints on the trophy, the thief was not so careful with the ransom note. Police were able to lift several fingerprints from the note and compare these to fingerprints provided by the suspects. |
