During their study of Native Americans, fifth graders are involved in an
interdisciplinary study of the culture of various groups of peoples:
In
social studies class students learn about
various North American tribes.
In
ILE
they study totem poles, Native American folk tales, masks, and are involved in
various independent projects.
In
art class
students construct totem poles, which tell original Native American-style folk
tales students have written.
P.E. class
adds creative movement, and it's all put together during an evening event in
which students act out their stories and show their totems before an audience of
family and friends.
