Journey along the Underground Railroad

Joan Southgate visits Mills Lawn
April 2002

Mills Lawn was privileged  to welcome Joan Southgate, the 73-year-old grandmother who is retracing the 400-mile route of slaves along the Underground Railroad. She began her journey in Ripley, along the Ohio River, and was making her way to Cleveland, on foot, when she stopped off in the Yellow Springs area, long-known as an important station along the trail to freedom.

Ms. Southgate shared the history of the Underground Railroad and the story of her journey during several talks with Mills Lawn students.
