9-11 Remembrance Mills Lawn remembered the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, with a touching flag ceremony. African American History In February students participated in the online Great African American History Search. Art in the Glen Fifth graders found inspiration in a beautiful, natural setting. Bing Davis The internationally known artist worked with students to create three large display pieces for our new building addition, as part of Looking In, Looking Out. Bi-Okoto We welcomed the traditional African drum and dance group as artists in residence for Looking In, Looking Out. Construction Project The Mills Lawn expansion project got underway and continued through the school year. Check out the month by month progress of the construction. COSI 2002 The 5/6 and 6th grades traveled to the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus for an exciting hands-on field trip. DARE Our sixth graders and students in the 5/6 class participated in Drug Abuse Resistance Education. E-pals Sixth graders were e-pals with students in Mesa, Arizona. Evening in Egypt The 6th grade showed off what it learned about Ancient Egypt, along with a special music and dance performance of King Tut. Fifty Nifty Moo-nited States Mills Lawn's patriotic cow was a big hit at Young's Dairy's Udder Chaos 2002. Greenhouse Third graders maintained lush plants in our school greenhouse. Groundhog Day Fun Our kindergartners enjoyed a perfect Groundhog Day. Groundhog Volleyball The sixth grade took on the Mills Lawn staff. Halloween Parade The annual parade of costumes through downtown Yellow Springs. Hal Walker The musician, singer, and songwriter came to Mills Lawn for a Looking In, Looking Out artist residency. International Night Sixth graders and students in the 5/6 class presented their work on more than 60 countries around the world. Invention Convention Sixth graders studied about inventions and inventors, then created their own amazing inventions. Jeff Hooper The director of Mad River Theater Works joined Mills Lawn for a Looking In, Looking Out residency with third and fourth graders. John Fleming The playwright and director joined Mills Lawn as an artist in residence for Looking In, Looking Out. Joan Damankos The visual artist came to Mills Lawn for a Looking In, Looking Out artist residency. Kindergarten School Pictures Our kindergartners posed for their first Mills Lawn school photos. Looking In, Looking Out Mills Lawn received a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to explore diversity through the arts in a year-long project. Looking In, Looking Out: The Movie We premiered a 60-minute movie about our year-long exploration of diversity through the arts. Magic Show Our third graders put on their amazing annual show. Margot Greenlee The dancer and choreographer joined Mills Lawn for a Looking In, Looking Out residency with first and second graders. Marilyn Klaben Storyteller, Marilyn Klaben, joined our first and second graders for a Looking In, Looking Out residency in October. Medieval Castles Students created medieval castles in art class. Medieval Festival Sixth graders and students in the 5/6 class held their annual tribute to those "days of old" and invited some special guests. Mills Lawn's 50th Anniversary! Our school began celebrating half a century of service to the Yellow Springs community. NCTE Convention Four Mills Lawn teachers presented at the National Council of Teachers of English Convention and met two hometown authors. Ohio Wax Museum Fourth graders researched and portrayed famous Ohioans. Peace Quilt Fourth graders created a peace quilt and learned about origami. Red Brick Garden Moo Our 2003 Udder Chaos entry Reindeer Games Younger students learned about cooperation and had fun in P.E. class. Rosetta Stone WebQuest Sixth graders participated in an online problem-based learning unit. Schuster Center ceramic relief Our third graders created a beautiful ceramic relief for the new Schuster Center for the Performing Arts in Dayton. Senior Tea Mills Lawn's annual party for senior citizens Sing in Yoruba Kindergartners taught the school how to sing in this Nigerian language. Sixth Grade Farewell We sent our sixth graders off to seventh grade with our annual celebration event. Slime! Sixth grade students created a slimy polymer. Spelling Bee Mills Lawn named its school champion. Take Apart Workshop Our third graders learned about machines by taking them apart. Teacher Training Video The Institute for Technology-Enhanced Learning (ITEL) of the University of Dayton sent a camera crew to Mills Lawn. Team Building The sixth grade learned about teamwork in an active way. Technology Teacher of the Year A Mills Lawn teacher received the regional Ohio Technology Teacher of the Year Award. Tech-Trek Wright-Patterson AFB Educational Outreach came to Mills Lawn with some amazing microscopes. Web Site 2nd Anniversary We celebrated with some new Mills Lawn e-cards and the milestone of 50,000 hits. Web Site Award Our web site received another award. Wildflower Hike Our third graders studied wildflowers in Glen Helen. Yellow Springs Schools received "Excellent" rating from the Ohio Department of Education. |
