100th Day of School
Kindergartners learned all about the meaning of 100. African American History Search Our sixth graders participated in an online web search featuring notable figures in our nation's history. AfriCow Our 2005 Udder Chaos entry was a big hit. Air Force Museum Sixth graders traveled to the museum to learn more about World Wars I and II. Arbor Day Students planted trees with the help of a local organization. Art to Remember Third and fourth graders created art for purchase in this art department fundraiser. Baby Chicks! First and second graders learned all about eggs. Band web site The Yellow Springs band program debuted a new web site. Basketball Shoot-a-thon Students raised money for a Mills Lawn student and his family. BIG Ideas Kindergartners learned about the main idea of a story and had fun, too. Bike Hike Third and fourth graders had fun as they learned about bike safety. Book Reviews Mills Lawn students wrote about their favorite books for the school web site. Clay in Art Class 2nd and 3rd graders learned about creating art with clay. Collins School Third graders visited a 19th Century one-room schoolhouse. Columbus Zoo Third graders spent the day studying animals close-up Community Band Concert The first annual faculty-student-alumni band concert CPR Training The Mills Lawn staff was trained in CPR. CSI: Mills Lawn Sixth graders participated in a chemistry and forensic science residency in January. Dayton Opera Guild Students performed in the Traveling Children's Opera Egyptian Art Masks Sixth graders created beautiful Egyptian funerary masks in art class. Eric Carle Art Kindergartners read and painted in the style of a famous author/illustrator Evening in Egypt Sixth graders showed what they learned about ancient Egypt, along with a performance of King Tut. Fifth Grade Science Fair Our fifth graders learned all about the scientific method as they presented some great projects. Fossil Hunt Our fourth graders traveled to Caesar Creek State Park to learn about fossils. Garden Concert First and second graders asked "How Does Your Garden Grow?" Glen Helen Week Fifth graders spent a week learning at our local nature preserve. Groundhog Volleyball Games Our sixth graders played the Mills Lawn staff in this annual event. Halloween Parade Mills Lawn students paraded in costumes through downtown Yellow Springs. Horseback Riding Our K-2 Intervention Program helped students learn to ride. Hurricane Relief Effort Mills Lawn students collected more than $2000 to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Indonesia Videoconference Mills Lawn sixth graders made use of the latest technology to share in a live videoconference with ninth grade students and a former counselor in Indonesia. International Night Sixth graders showed what they learned about countries around the world at this annual event. Invention Convention Our sixth graders' adventure in creative problem solving. K12 Gallery Exhibit Mills Lawn students were invited to display artwork at this Dayton arts facility for young people. KidFood Drive In November the Mills Lawn Student Council sponsored its annual collection of food and other items for the local food pantry. KinderConcert Our kindergartners showed "Pure Imagination." Kindergarten Crowning Mills Lawn welcomed its youngest students. Kindergarten First Day Our kindergarteners came for their very first day of school at Mills Lawn. Kindergarten Japan Celebration Our kindergartners studied Japan, enjoyed a guest speaker, and some great food. Kindergarten School Pictures Our kindergarteners had their first-ever Mills Lawn school photos taken. Long Journey Home Mad River Theater works came to Mills Lawn with a play about The Great Depression. Magic Show Our third graders had some tricks up their sleeves. Medieval Festival Sixth graders learned about those days of old. Music Recitals Our general music students had a chance to show off their talents. Native American Totems Fifth graders wrote folk tales, created totems, and performed skits about Native American cultures. Office Depot 5% Back Program Mills Lawn earns free supplies when you shop at Office Depot. Ohio, That's Where I Belong Third and fourth graders put on their Ohio musical in March and invited its composer to attend. Ohio Time Line Live! Fourth graders portrayed famous figures in Ohio's history. Open House Mills Lawn welcomed students, parents, and friends on the evening before the first day of school. Owls! Nocturnal birds visited the kindergarten classes. Owl feeding habits Second graders learned about barn owls. Owl Pellets Fifth graders dissected owl pellets to learn about the diversity and interdependence of living things. Peifer Orchard visit Our kindergarteners checked out the apple harvest at a local orchard. Reindeer Run Kindergartners carried on a Mills Lawn holiday tradition. Project Backpack Mills Lawn aided students who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. PTO Ice Skating Party Our PTO sponsored an ice skating party in February. Reality Day Fifth and sixth graders learned about the world of work and money. Sixth Grade Farewell Mills Lawn sent its oldest students of to seventh grade "Slumber Party" The kindergarten classes had a pretend slumber party to wrap up their study of night. Sno-Me Second graders created snowy sculptures. Spelling Bee Mills Lawn named its 2005 champion. Spaghetti Dinner The Mills Lawn PTO cooked up some great food for its election night fundraiser. St. Nicholas Day Kindergartners learned about a Dutch holiday tradition. St. Patrick's Day The MLS Student Council sponsored an after-school party. Starbase Our fifth graders participated in this WPAFB science program. The State of Our Schools Our superintendent and a featured guest spoke at this PTO event in February. Teachers Emeritus Mills Lawn honored three retiring teachers. Tech Trek Fifth graders explored different kinds of microscopes. Team Building Students participated in joint P.E./counselor activities. Tic-Tac-Sno Third and sixth grades buddy classes worked together. Toys for Tots Mills Lawn collected toys for this annual drive sponsored by our Student Council and the Marine Corps Reserve. Treasures of Ancient Egypt Sixth graders visited The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt at the Dayton Art Institute. Painting Exploration Mills Lawn students learned about painting in an introductory exploration in art class. Paper Sculptures First graders created some beautiful artworks. Starbase Fifth graders participated in a special science program at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. Student Council Mills Lawn elects its Student Council Leadership Team. Tech Trek Fifth and sixth graders explored the world of microscopes The Tickleoctopus Kindergartners read a fun book and then had fun creating. Underground Railroad An award-winning author and a musician/songwriter visit Mills Lawn. Valentine's Day Kindergartners celebrated the day with a book, cards, and cookies. Virginia Hamilton Quilt Fifth and sixth graders honored the late local author. Volunteer Reception Mills Lawn expressed thanks to its many volunteers. Walk-a-thon First and second graders raised funds for a fellow student dealing with a serious illness. Windmill Farm Kindergarteners checked out the pumpkin harvest in October.
